Adult Sailing Instruction
50.1 Introduction to Centerboards (Catalina 14.2)
Unlike learning aboard a stable and dry keelboat (like an Ensign or a J-24)‚ centerboard sailboats require that the sailor use their own weight to balance the boat. The sailing is typically faster‚ closer to the water‚ and wetter.
This course covers rigging‚ launching (including the use of yard dollies and cranes) and basic centerboard sailing techniques including hiking‚ coordinating crew weight to balance the boat‚ roll-tacking and steering with a tiller extension. Capsize recovery is introduced and practiced.
This class will meet twice a week for two weeks and will be sailed aboard Catalina 14.2 centerboard sailboats.
Prerequisites: 10.1‚ 10.2. A Light Air Rating and students should expect to swim! No cotton clothing should be worn. Instead‚ students should dress in layers of synthetic materials (even under garments) and if a wet suit (4mm or less) and boots is owned‚ it should be worn.
Proficiency in skills at this level is required for a new MCSC Light Air Rating/Catalina Endorsement.
