50.4 Introduction to the ILCA (formerly Laser)

The ILCA (formerly called the Laser) is a high-performance centerboard boat sailed by one person.

This course covers rig selection‚ rigging‚ launching (including the use of yard dollies and ramps) and basic ILCA sailing techniques including hiking‚ driving‚ tacking‚ gybing‚ using weight to balance the boat‚ roll-tacking and capsize recovery. Game play and drills will be introduced.

This class will meet once a week for four weeks.

Prerequisites: 10.1 and 50.1. A Light Air Rating and students should expect to swim! No cotton clothing should be worn. Instead‚ students should dress in layers of synthetic materials (even under garments) and if a wet suit (4mm or less) and boots is owned‚ it should be worn.

Proficiency in skills at this level is required to participate in ILCA Racing‚ which will happen on Saturday in the weeks after this class.
