Adult Sailing Instruction

7.) Adult Introduction to Centerboards

Unlike learning about a stable and dry keelboat (like an Ensign or a J-24)‚ centerboard sailboats require that the sailor use their own weight to balance the boat. The sailing is typically faster‚ closer to the water‚ and wetter.

This Adult Introduction to Centerboard course covers launching‚ rigging‚ and basic centerboard sailing techniques including hiking‚ coordinating crew weight to balance the boat‚ roll-tacking and steering with a tiller extension. Capsizing is also introduced and practiced.

Prerequisites: A Light Air rating is required to take this course and students should expect to swim!

Most students will earn an endorsement to use MCSC’s fleet of Catalina centerboard boats during open sail‚ wind conditions‚ allowing.

No cotton clothing should be worn. Instead‚ dress in layers of synthetic materials (even under garments). If you have a wet suit (4mm or less) and boots‚ bring them.
