Adult Sailing Instruction

10.2 Skill Building for Daysailors (Ensigns)

Designed for sailors with a Light Air rating (or equivalent experience) who are actively practicing their sailing skills. Instruction will incorporate new Ensign tools and focus on gybing‚ angles and balance‚ headsail management‚ crew overboard‚ sail trim‚ basic reefing‚ weight management‚ moorings‚ tacking to close hauled‚ and teamwork. By experimenting with the tools of trim and balance‚ including headsail selection‚ the traveler‚ outhaul‚ cunningham‚ and vang‚ the students will learn to sense when the boat is over- and under-powered and pilot the boat at its most balanced‚ efficient‚ and safest speeds and angles. Class meets once a week for three weeks‚ with required practice between sessions.

While current holders of Medium Ratings and Ensign Endorsements are not required to participate‚ this course introduces a richer vocabulary and larger set of tools to Ensign sailing‚ so it is highly recommended for all Ensign sailors with Light and Medium Ratings.

Proficiency in skills at this level is required for a new MCSC Medium Air Rating/Ensign Endorsement.

Prerequisites: 10.1 or equivalent‚ a Light Air Rating and pre-assessment.
